As the abstract suggests, what we do is important and even may be vital. The following may be applicable in many negotiations situations. Although approached from the perspective of law enforcement and hostage / crisis negotiations, selection of proper personnel to do the job is always a priority. How negotiators and behavioral health specialists are selected is vital to overall success regardless of the venue. How to put negotiators and psychologists together, and to utilize the unique skills of each, can affect both short and long-term outcomes. (Greenstone, 2005) The following outlines basic selection qualifications and procedures.

It has been said that two heads are better than one. How about two, three or five heads, all trained and experienced as they work as a coordinated team to effectively handle the one head on the other side? One can imagine the strength, skill, proficiency and effectiveness of coordinated disciplines working together toward a common end. No one has all of the answers; together, you will have most of them when you need them.
